Causes of Hemroids

Treat Your Body – Treat Your Hemroids.

On this page we will look at the common causes of hemroids and the implications for effective hemroid treatment and hemroid cure options.

One of the biggest fallacies about hemroid treatments is that there’s a miraculous pill out there that will
permanently eradicate you hemroids. Hemroid symptoms are, in many cases, indicative of trouble with your overall digestive health. As such, pills, ointments and the like are likely to produce only temporary and/or partial hemroid relief in the absence of dietary or lifestyle changes.

Sorry to disappoint, but there is help at hand.

There are steps that you can take to improve your digestive health that will pay dividends for years to come. Let’s look at some of the conditions that can predispose a person to developing hemroid symptoms:

1. Diarrhea – If you chronically suffer from chronic diarrhea, then clearly your digestive system is not working properly. For the majority of sufferers, a little sleuthing can reveal the underlying issue or issues. Relief from diarrhea will generally provide significant hemroid relief also.  The most common causes of diarrhea are:

a. Lactose Intollerance - This is where you body has a hard time digesting the sugar lactose, which is found in milk and other dairy products. For many people, reducing or eliminating their dietary intake of lactose can result in a measurable and fast improvement in their symptoms.

b. Chronic antibiotic use can frequently cause diarrhea. the mechanism behind this is that antibiotics, in addition to killing harmful bacteria, can also kill the good bacteria that live in your intestines and that is so important to aiding digestion. Even without chronic antibiotic use, people may have a reduction in their normal bowel flora levels. This can often be remedied by increasing your dietary intake of foods containing many of the healthy bacteria in the form of live cultures. for example, many yogurts contain Lactobacilli or Acidophillous. Products such as DanActive™, or my favorite, Kefir can help restore healthier levels of normal bowel flora and improve digestion and boost immunity.

c. Irritable Bowel Syndrome – This is a particularly nasty condition that can cause the sufferer to have multiple loose bowel movements daily along with abdominal cramping and urgency. Sufferers often report a feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation.

d. Celiac Disease is an intollerance to dietary gluten which, unfortunately is found in wheat and wheat products, sadly, including beer. A diagnosis of celiac disease is important where the condition exists as the small intestine becomes progressively damaged (a process known as flattening of the villi) and hampers the intestines ability to absorb nutrients from food. With celiac disease, the elimination of dietary gluten will often resolve or greatly reduce the symptoms. A diagnosis of celiac disease can be made by blood tests and/or biopsy. Here is a link to a good article on Celiac disease and its diagnosis. Celiac disease is only one condition that falls under the broad category of malabsorbtion syndromes

e. Inflammatory Bowel Disease — There are several types of inflammatory bowel disease, with the most common being Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions are thought to be auto-immune in origin where person’s own immune system creates antibodies against its digestive tract.

- Crohn’s Disease — Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive system from mouth to anus. Symptoms may include mouth ulcers, frequent loose stools, abdominal discomfort, weight loss and fever.

- Ulcerative Colitis — Symptoms of ulcerative colitis depend upon the severity of the disease, but can include frequent, loose bloody stools, low blood count, abdominal pain or discomfort and fever.

f. Infections — Intestinal infections are a relatively rare cause of chronic diarrhea in people who live in developed countries such as the US.

g. Other Medications — Many medications, homeopathic remedies and nutritional supplements list diarrhea as a possible side-effect. It is always wise to review the literature that accompanies your medication or consult with your physician or pharmacist.

Investigation by a medical professional into the cause of your chronic diarrhea is an important step to take in improving your digestive health and decreasing or eliminating your hemroid symptoms.

2. Constipation

Eating a poor diet, inadequate fluid intake, or abusing laxatives are frequent causes of constipation. In addition, some medicines can lead to constipation. These include several antidepressants, antacids containing aluminum or calcium, antihistamines, diuretics (water pills), and anti-parkinsonism meds.

a. Diet – People can become constipated if they eat a diet low in high-fiber foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. There is research that shows that high-fiber diets do help prevent constipation. In addition, diets high in red meat, dairy products and eggs, or simple sugars (candy, cakes, confectionary) may also contribute to the risk of constipation. A reliance on prepared and highly processed foods may be a harbinger of an inadequately balanced diet. These types of products are often low in dietary fiber.

b. Inadequate Fluid Intake, especially in the elderly can lead to constipation (among other things) that may precipitate hemroid symptoms. The importance of your body being adequately hydrated cannot be overstated. Consider this: Every chemical reaction that takes place in your body (millions of them) take place in the presence of water. Water is to the body what oil is to the car. However, you can’t wait 3000 miles to drink more! Adequate hydration also lowers the risk of urinary tract infections and blood clots.

c. Misuse of Enemas, Laxatives and Stool Softeners – Laxatives are not a cure for constipation. They may remedy constipation from time to time, but they do not treat the underlying cause. In addition, laxatives may become habit-forming. Frequent use of laxatives may cause your body to loose its normal urge to defecate and may result in a reliance on them for bowel movements, a condition known as Lazy Bowel Syndrome. Laxatives are also well known to cause diarrhea.

For this same reason, if you use enemas too often, your body may begin to depend on them. Too many enemas may stop you from having normal bowel movements. Too much mineral oil, another popular laxative, can lower your body’s ability to use key fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

d. Bedrest or Lack of Exercise – Lack of exercise or long periods of bedrest may also lead to constipation. Maintaining an appropriate level of activity offers many health benefits, one of which being a reduction in the prevalence of constipation. Increased activity can help in the maintenance on a normal body weight and a general feeling of mental alertness and overall well-being and may reduce the prevalence and severity of hemroid symptoms.

e. Ignoring the Urge – The urge to have a bowel movement should not be ignored. Over time, when a person ignores this alert, often the body learns to do away with this natural urge and chronic constipation develops. one consequence of this is that a person may find themselves straining on the toilet, a definite risk factor for hemroid symptoms.
